REVIEW: Pistachio Creme Oreo Thins Cookies

Pistachio Creme Oreo Thins Cookies

Since their inception in 2015, Oreo Thins have come in predominantly safe flavors. Original, Chocolate, Mint, Lemon, and even Coconut are far cries from the wild limited editions Nabisco have rolled out with their full-sized breadwinner in recent years.

The craziest Thins have gotten prior to the #MyOreoCreation contest’s Pina Colada is Salted Caramel, and even that is a pretty common and very popular profile among sweet tooth cookie hunters.

But for 2018, three years into their snack life, Thins are coming hard with a new flavor that’s sort of safe but also brand new and to me, pretty exciting – Pistachio.

Pistachio Creme Oreo Thins Cookies 3

The light green crème is sandwiched between two wafer-thin chocolate cookies, boasting the 66 percent thinner size of all its prior incarnations. The cookies carry a gentle nutty and sweet aroma rounded out by a kiss of cocoa.

I’m not sure what the general consensus is on Thins versus the full sized real deal, but I enjoy their soft crumbly texture and mild sweetness, and the Pistachio version is no exception.

The sweet somewhat floral notes of the crème work surprisingly well with the chocolate cookie, with neither flavor being too dominant over the other. The overall taste reminds me of pistachio ice cream, both in flavor and texture, with hints of almond-y marzipan and creamy vanilla.

I find them incredibly easy to put back in succession with a unique but very snack-able flavor that’s very tasty. It’s a much truer representation of sweet pistachio than the coconut ones were of coconut, and much like with the also delicious Pina Colada, the smaller amount of crème works well to deliver the right amount of flavor without being too intense.

There’s something old school and comforting about pistachio that feels like a cozy day at grandma’s house or grabbing a cone at the oldest scoop shop in town. It’s classic but new, and as a result, it’s a wonderful change from more bizarre Nabisco attempts, like Swedish Fish and Root Beer Float.

Keep in mind these aren’t for everyone, but as someone who thinks Pistachio Pistachio is one of the more underrated Ben & Jerry’s pints, I think these Thins are a smashing success. Or at least a success that’s going to find me smashing six in a row without blinking an eye.

REVIEW: Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie Oreo Cookies

Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie Oreo Cookies

Oreo is the Star Wars of cookies. While I’m always excited about the new flavor announcements, I feel like they come out too frequently these days, and I may be coming down with a case of “cookie fatigue.”

Seriously, how many peanut butter varieties can Nabisco possible pass off as new? We’ve already had the standard Peanut Butter, PB&J, and Reese’s in recent years. Was Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie necessary? Doesn’t this kinda feel like a slight swerve on an established flavor?

Will Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie be the Solo of the Oreo Snackematic Universe?!

Better question – What the heck am I talking about?

Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie Oreo Cookies 2

I’m talking about Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie Oreo Cookies. The biggest difference between these and the aforementioned Peanut Butter flavors is the graham cookie, which I somehow overlooked even though it makes perfect sense to the pie it’s mimicking.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie Oreo Cookies 3

Upon ripping open the annoying Oreo packaging, I was hit by the pleasant scent of Nutter Butter, and all my worries flew out the window. It was comforting and akin to seeing that nostalgic “a long time ago in a galaxy far far away” pop up on screen.

I’ll stop trying to make this Star Wars parallel now and start the review.

Everything about this cookie is grittier than your normal Oreo. The Graham cookies have a slightly harder and sandier texture, which again, reminded me of Nutter Butter.

The crème also chews like it has bits of cookie crumb, but there was no indication of that on the package.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie Oreo Cookies 4

As for the taste? It’s nice. They would have really had to screw up for it not to be though, right?

I wouldn’t say the crème flavors explode. In the end, I was left thinking the graham was the lead of the movie. I’m not sure that’s gonna make too many people happy to hear, but the chocolate and peanut butter, while good, were a little masked by the cookie flavor.

The aftertaste was heavily graham, with peanut butter on the back of my tongue. I keep coming back to it, but these do remind me of Nutter Butter, so I guess the chocolate kinda gets a bit lost.

With all that said, I like these. They aren’t better than the Reese’s Oreo, but they’re better than the standard Peanut Butter Oreo, which I’ve always found to be disappointing.

These aren’t as cloying as the last few Oreo flavors I’ve tried, so that was a nice change of pace. The grittiness did, however, dry my mouth out, so maybe keep a glass of milk nearby.

So, like Solo, Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie: An Oreo Story was pretty much a fun little detour that will probably be ultimately forgettable. These aren’t gonna be anyone’s favorite Oreo cookie.

I was ready to write them off as unnecessary, but they ended up standing on their own well enough. I would recommend picking up a bag if that’s even what you call Oreo packaging.

Rating: 7 out of 10
Pros: A nice blend of the three flavors involved. Not as disgustingly sweet as the previous flavors. You’ll like these if you like Nutter Butter. Solo was a decent movie, I guess.
Cons: A gritty reboot of the normal Peanut Butter Oreo. Dry. A little too Graham heavy. Chocolate gets outshined. Oreo may be running out of ideas soon. Cookie fatigue.

REVIEW: Keebler Special Batch Chocolate Caramel Fudge Stripes Cookies

Keebler Special Batch Chocolate Caramel Fudge Stripes Cookies

As I’m sure that most of my fellow southerners understand, the arrival of May means the start of the hot, humid weather that’s going to be around for the rest of the summer. Most people give up trying to endure the heat and crank up the air conditioner at this point, but I normally try to stick it out until the official start of summer before turning mine on.

So, considering that my house is 87 degrees right now, there’s no way I’m going to turn my oven on to bake anything. Luckily, the grocery store has a wide enough variety of ready-to-eat cookies that I can enjoy a different treat every night of the week without ever having to heat up my kitchen!

Keebler’s Fudge Stripes have been a favorite of mine ever since I was a kid, and I love things that pair chocolate and caramel together, so the idea behind Keebler’s new Special Batch Chocolate Caramel Fudge Stripes sounded awesome to me when I spotted them while I strolled around Walmart, taking in the breeze from their industrial air conditioners.

Keebler Special Batch Chocolate Caramel Fudge Stripes Cookies 2

Once I got them home and actually opened up the bag to grab a handful, though, my expectations started tank fast. First off, they smelled super weird. It’s kind of hard to describe, but they have this buttery, artificial aroma to them that reminds me of microwave kettle corn.

Keebler Special Batch Chocolate Caramel Fudge Stripes Cookies 3

That’s probably due to the caramel fudge coating on them, which I’d say took up about 80 percent of the chocolate shortbread cookie’s surface area. Setting that aside, seeing the abundance of caramel fudge on these cookies made me excited that I was going to get some big caramel flavor from Ernie’s newest creation!

But it was a super let-down. Even though these have a distinct appearance and aroma when compared to the original ones, they taste about the same. The caramel coating got completely lost somehow, and the shortbread cookies only had the very lightest hints of cocoa when I was really searching for it.

That’s a real shame! Chocolate and caramel done right should complement one another like peanut butter and jelly.

In retrospect, these cookies might have tasted better if Keebler had used caramel-flavored shortbread and stuck to dipping it into their standard fudge coating. Something about trying to make the fudge taste like caramel makes the cookie’s entire flavor profile not work.

In any case, if the Keebler elves want to live up to their promise of only making cookies and crackers that are uncommonly good, this is a batch of cookies that needs to head back to the Fac-Tree for some more work.

Rating: 4 out of 10
Pros: Not having to heat up my oven. Sounded like a great idea on the package. They don’t actually taste bad on their own.
Cons: Smell like microwave kettlecorn. No caramel or chocolate taste. They taste like a regular Fudge Stripes cookie. Not being uncommonly good.

REVIEW: Keebler Whoopsy! Fudge Stripes Cookies

Keebler Whoopsy Fudge Stripes Cookies

Is “accidentally” coating shortbread cookies completely with fudge instead of being dipped on one side and drizzled really worthy of a whoopsy?

I can think of several true whoopsies that could happen to Ernie and his fellow Keebler Elves.

If Keebler Club Crackers were shaped like Ritz Crackers, that would be a whoopsy. If Ernie the Elf burned down the Hollow Tree by accident, that would most definitely be a whoopsy. But the new Whoopsy! Fudge Stripes Cookies don’t seem to be as bad as those hypothetical situations.

Keebler Whoopsy Fudge Stripes Cookies 2

The fudge enrobes the shortbread cookie, making it look like its wearing a skintight Speedo body suit so that it can do laps in a glass of milk. At some angles, they look like thin donuts dipped in chocolate icing.

But, it’s might be a bit too skintight since the fudge sinks into every nook and cranny of the cookie’s design, allow us to see the outline of what’s underneath. It’s like seeing the shape of your innie or outie belly button or nipples from the way a skintight Speedo bodysuit stretches.

Keebler Whoopsy Fudge Stripes Cookies 3

Despite the extra fudge, the cookie within provides a hearty crunch. I somewhat expected the chocolatey exterior to dampened the crispiness, like with a fudge-covered Oreo, but the layer’s thinness doesn’t affect the baked good’s snap.

The extra coating also doesn’t affect the shortbread’s flavor. I mean, it tastes like a regular Fudge Stripes Cookie, but, obviously, fudgier. The flavor of the sweet and buttery cookie under the coating still comes through. But the difference between it and the original version is so slight that it disappoints me a little.

There’s nothing intriguing about Whoopsy! Fudge Stripes Cookies. They have more of something they had a lot of to begin with, and that’s it. Yeah, more fudge is nice, but they’re not better or worse than the original, which is pretty gosh darn tasty. If there was a significant difference between it and the original, like Oops! All-Berries Cap’n Crunch Cereal and Crunchberries Cereal, then it would be a bit more exciting.

With that said, if you enjoy the classic cookie from Keebler, I guarantee you’ll like these.

Pros: Tastes like a regular Fudge Stripes Cookie, but slightly fudgier. Crunchy shortbread cookie. More fudge.
Cons: Not really a true whoopsy. Not that different from original Fudge Stripes Cookies. Accidentally burning down the Hollow Tree.

QUICK REVIEW: My Oreo Creation Pina Colada Oreo Cookies

My Oreo Creation Pina Colada Oreo Cookies

What is it?

Piña Colada Oreo Thins are one of the three finalists in the #MyOreoCreation contest. It’s a thin layer of pineapple and coconut flavored-creme sandwiched by two thin Golden cookies.

My Oreo Creation Pina Colada Oreo Cookies 2

Conjured up by a guy in Camden County, NJ, I chuckle a bit as I imagine him trying to think happy tropical getaway thoughts in the dead of a snowy, cold winter.

How is it?

It takes you to there – there as in that sunny beach destination. I expected this one to be overly coconut-y because most tropical flavors typically lean that way. But, there’s a great balance of between the two flavors.

My Oreo Creation Pina Colada Oreo Cookies 4

The trusty flavor we know and love from the existing Coconut Oreo Thins provides a nice backdrop and ending note to the brighter, more citrusy pineapple. The Golden cookie is just there as the vehicle, but a chocolate cookie would definitely not work in this flavor combo. I’m glad Nabisco made this an Oreo Thins because if it were a regular Oreo, the creme might be too much.

Is there anything else I need to know?

This cookie reminds me of a Big Stick and that’s a compliment. It reminds me of my childhood and those hot California summers with melted sugary goodness running down my hands and face. Now, I can taste that but without the mess!

Conclusion:

I’ve had all three flavors and this one is my favorite by far. Vote for it on #MyOreoCreation to keep it around!
