REVIEW: Baskin-Robbins Scoops Ahoy U.S.S. Butterscotch Ice Cream

Baskin Robbins Scoops Ahoy U S S Butterscotch Ice Cream

Baskin-Robbins’ Scoops Ahoy U.S.S. Butterscotch Ice Cream is a new Baskin-Robbins pint flavor that’s a product tie-in with Netflix’s Stranger Things. It’s supposedly a flavor that’s available at the fictional Scoops Ahoy Ice Cream Parlor in the show.

My use of “supposedly” in the opening paragraph probably gave you a hint that I haven’t watched an episode of Stranger Things. I also haven’t seen Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Killing Eve, The Walking Dead, and many other critically acclaimed TV shows that friends say I should watch, but don’t, which lets me scan Twitter freely without caring about spoilers. But, I’m strapped to this chair to process Spotted photos and write reviews. That’s my life. Someone, please send help.

U.S.S. Butterscotch features butterscotch-flavored ice cream with butterscotch pieces and a toffee-flavored ribbon. It’s also Baskin-Robbins’ Flavor of the Month of July 2019.

The base has a mild butterscotch flavor that starts the potency at a two. Add the ribbon, and the Werther’s Original-like flavor gets kicked up to a five. When I include the butterscotch pieces with the other two components, the degree of sweet and buttery flavor gets turned up to a nine.

Why not a ten? Well, I figure if it’s at its max, then there might be too much butterscotch. But, at no point, while eating a quarter of the pint did I feel it was overkill.

The texture of the ice cream base is creamy, but it’s softer and airier than a Ben & Jerry’s base. It scoops more like Dreyer’s/Edy’s Slow Churned. The super crunchy butterscotch pieces completely contrast the base’s texture. However, the toffee-flavored ribbon, which I expected to be gooey, wasn’t what I’d consider gooey. It was just there. But the thing about the mix-ins is that there’s not a lot of them throughout the pint. My spoon faced too many empty seas of off-white butterscotch ice cream.

Baskin Robbins Scoops Ahoy U S S Butterscotch Ice Cream Other Stranger Things Flavors

There are three other Stranger Things varieties — Praline Portal, Mind Flayer Mint, and Shadow Sherbet. But they’re renamed and repackaged versions of the following regular Baskin-Robbins flavors — Pralines ‘n Cream, Mint Chocolate Chip, and Rainbow Sherbet. Yawn.

Remember Ben & Jerry’s Limited Batch Ron Burgundy’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch with butterscotch ice cream and butterscotch swirls? If you miss that variety buried six feet under (another show I didn’t watch) in the Flavor Graveyard, you’ll most likely enjoy this.

REVIEW: Dunkin’ and Baskin-Robbins Affogato

Dunkin and Baskin Robbins Affogato Sign

What is the Dunkin’ and Baskin-Robbins Affogato?

An affogato is a classic Italian dessert featuring gelato “drowned” (direct translation of the word) by warm espresso. In this version, it’s naturally Dunkin’s espresso poured over Baskin-Robbin’s ice cream.

How is it?

Better than expected!

This combination isn’t new to me, but Dunkin’ isn’t really a place where I would think to order this because it sounds fancy and frou frou. But, if you haven’t tried one yet, it basically tastes like a coffee milkshake (if ordered with vanilla like I did).

Dunkin and Baskin Robbins Affogato Brains

However, because ice cream is less dense than gelato, the pour-over created a weird looking texture that I can only describe as brain-like. Appetizing, I know.

Also, the vanilla ice cream was a bit too icy for my liking. Baskin-Robbins used to the gold standard for me as a kid! Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

Is there anything else you need to know?

Dunkin and Baskin Robbins Affogato Bite

You can get any one of the 31 flavors as the base for your affogato! The gal working mentioned that she tried it with the Jamoca Almond Fudge and didn’t love it because it just tasted like a “less sweet version.” So, it’s probably better to stick with a more plain flavor.

Conclusion:

I would order this again! I think this new offering makes the combo stores a bit more exciting for me. I like less-sweet flavor profiles, so next time I’ll get it with a chocolate ice cream for a mocha version!

QUICK REVIEW: Baskin-Robbins Bobsled Brownie Ice Cream

Baskin Robbins Bobsled Brownie Ice Cream

When the snowmen in my yard light impromptu bonfires to fight the frigid cold, ice cream is the last thing on my mind. Still, the sight of Baskin-Robbins returning Bobsled Brownie made me race over for a frozen treat. January’s Flavor of the Month boasts blonde brownie pieces and a fudge crackle ribbon mixed with milk-chocolate-mousse and butter-caramel-flavored ice creams.

The dessert itself is an imposing sight with a large crag of the fudge crackle ribbon jutting out of the ice cream mountain base. The chocolate and caramel ice cream slopes are swirled together preventing one from isolating a single track. Fortunately, the two combine to provide a smooth, creamy consistency with a flavor that vacillates depending on the ratio in any given spoonful.

Depressingly, the brownie pieces that always excite me when advertised are neither large nor frequent enough to add more than a spongy textural contrast. They don’t detract from the dessert, but I would not have noticed their absence. An unexpected rider for me is the attenuated but still chewy chunks of caramel that are as commonplace as the brownie bits. The flavor works well, but I do not appreciate having to chew parts of my ice cream.

The fudge crackle ribbon, on the other hand, is bold and pervasive but also firm and difficult to break apart. Small pieces occasionally cleave off from the core and find themselves in the mix, but a pickaxe the pink plastic spoon is not. This does, however, result in unavoidably fudgy, dark spoonfuls of the crackle ribbon that my chocoholic self adores.

Despite flirting with the lip of a caramel curve, Bobsled Brownie is an enjoyable treat. While some of the elements seem as out of place as a Jamaican bobsled team, everything works well enough together to be a cool running.

QUICK REVIEW: Baskin-Robbins York Peppermint Pattie Ice Cream

Baskin Robbins York Peppermint Pattie Ice Cream

Santa is being blackmailed by a candy cane consortium. This cabal holds torrid photos of him chain smoking candy cigars while downing eggnog in underground, high-stakes Candy Land games.

That’s the narrative I have constructed anyhow to explain how a cane-shaped hard candy holds dominion as the de facto peppermint-flavored Christmas treat over chocolate alternatives. Refusing to bow to Santa’s shame-induced minty mandate, Baskin-Robbins is making York Peppermint Pattie Ice Cream their December Flavor of the Month. Mini York peppermint patties are mixed with a dark chocolate mint ribbon in mint flavored ice cream.

Packing enough peppermint punch that Baskin-Robbins must have clearcut Mr. Mint’s Peppermint Forest to meet menthol demand. Take that big candy cane! York Peppermint Pattie Ice Cream certainly believes in truth in advertising.

Baskin Robbins York Peppermint Pattie Ice Cream 2

Mint flavor relentlessly and refreshingly wages a cold war on your mouth while the chocolate mint ribbon adds a smooth, fudgy component and provides a consistent if somewhat muted chocolate note. Once one of the plentiful peppermint patties come into play, the already pleasant experience is enhanced by a crisp snap in addition to the fully present classic flavor.

Despite the heavy peppermint hand, it never crosses the candy colored line into being too much of a good thing. A bit more cocoa flavor, courtesy of surface mining Chocolate Mountain’s chocolatey ore perhaps, would provide a better balance, but that is a minor quibble.

Baskin Robbins York Peppermint Pattie Ice Cream 3

The unfortunate loss of habitat driving a dejected Mr. Mint from a life of lumberjacking to that of figure skating aside, peppermint fans, and York Peppermint Pattie fans in particular, are well served by this satisfying take on the genuine article. Baskin-Robbins makes my nice list for exchanging the questionably ubiquitous candy cane for the underrepresented but delicious York Peppermint Pattie.

QUICK REVIEW: Baskin-Robbins Tiramisu Ice Cream

Baskin Robbins Tiramisum Ice Cream

Bucking the ho ho ho-hum trend of cramming peppermint or gingerbread into every new or limited flavor this time of year, Baskin-Robbins’ November Flavor of the Month is Tiramisu. Tiramisu-flavored ice cream is filled with pound cake pieces, a chocolate mocha ribbon, and chocolate flakes.

Coffee is unabashedly the dominant flavor in this dish, emanating a distinct smell and exercising as much subtlety as a Targaryen barbecue. The tiramisu-flavored ice cream base seems enjoyable on its own, but I had difficulty isolating it from the generous mocha ribbon.

Baskin Robbins Tiramisum Ice Cream 2

Unfortunately, this proves to be too much of a good thing as a coffee-flavored ribbon in a coffee-flavored base leaves a somewhat bitter aftertaste and feels as unnecessary as taking a dip in Goo Lagoon when you already live in a pineapple under the sea.

It also creates a problem for the semi-sweet chocolate flakes which add a nice snap but fail to punch up the chocolate notes enough to stand out despite decent representation. Meanwhile, the scarce pound cake pieces are relegated to merely providing a pleasant spongy texture as their flavor is completely overshadowed by the coffee.

Baskin Robbins Tiramisum Ice Cream 3

Perhaps the rich buttery essence of a mascarpone swirl would have resulted in a more balanced and authentic flavor than the coffee overload created by the mocha ribbon.

I like a bold coffee-flavored chocolate ice cream, and this certainly fits that bill; it just isn’t the iconic, layered taste experience you know and love in ice cream form. This rendition of tiramisu is as authentic to its Italian heritage as a Brooklyn plumber riding a dinosaur.
